Duty Free Allowances ...

Your duty free shopping at East Midlands Airport depends on your final destination, as detailed above, as does any tax free allowances so do make sure you are aware what savings you can take advantage of before travel to avoid any disappointment.

When flying into the UK from the EU you are able to bring into the Country the following goods without incurring any additional tax charges:

  • 1 Litre of alcoholic beverages stronger than 22%, or 2 Litres of still table wine, or fortified or sparkling wine, or other liqueurs

  • 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco

  • 250ml of toilet water and 50g of perfume

  • Other goods to the value of £145, including souvenirs

  • Goods obtained duty and tax paid in the EU are unlimited

For those goods that are being brought into the UK that have already had tax paid, no tax or duty will have to be paid on them.

Note that all goods, especially alcohol or tobacco, brought into the Country must be transported by the passenger, for the passenger's own consumption or they are gifts.

Goods of any nature brought into the UK for payment or resale will be regarded by Customs as for a commercial purpose.

Should Customs suspect goods are being brought into the Country for a commercial use, Customs Officers will ask a series of questions relating to the goods, and make checks into the goods and your answers will be made.

Questions asked by Customs can include why the goods were bought and how much was paid, specifically about the type and quantity of goods, how often the passenger travels and normal consumption.

Also taken into account is whether the goods look as though they have been hidden, or if they are on display.

Customs will suspect the following for example:

  • 110 Litres of beer
  • 90 Litres of wine
  • 10 Litres of spirits
  • 20 Litres of fortified wine (i.e. port or sherry)
  • 3,200 cigarettes
  • 200 cigars
  • 400 cigarillos
  • 3kg tobacco

Any goods considered to being imported for a commercial use risk being seized and not returned.  Likewise, if the goods are caught being sold. Customs view this as a very serious offence that can result in up to seven years in prison.

Some Countries have their own restrictions and laws on the amounts of alcohol and tobacco brought in and out of their Country - some even require you to carry documentation on the goods, so check before you travel any restrictions that are in place.

NOTE: The following EU Countries have restrictions on tobacco and alcohol:

  Estonia 200 cigarettes, or
